RAW: Natural Born Artists

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Once again, it’s been a while. I haven’t made time for these blog posts. I’ve neglected the blog…I’ll try not to do that again. In the meantime though, while you’re eagerly awaiting another blog post from me you can stay even more up to date with everything on my Nathan Monk Art Facebook page.

A couple weeks ago, I was chosen to be part of RAW’s October event, Provocations. On Thursday, October 11, I will be showcasing my latest artwork along with 15+ other artists and there will also be live music, a fashion show, two accessory designers there, and more! It will all be happening at Bartini’s, located at 39 West Jackson Plaza, #75 INDIANAPOLIS, IN. This is a wonderful opportunity to reach a new audience while being  part of such a positive, creative group of people, and I’m very thankful for it.

You might be asking yourself, “What is RAW?”  ”RAW:natural born artists is an independent arts organization that hand-selects and spotlights independent creatives in visual art, film, fashion, music, hair & makeup artistry, photography, models and performing art.

RAW events are multifaceted artistic showcases. Each event features a film screening, musical performances, a fashion show, an art gallery, an accessory designer, performance art and a featured hairstylist and makeup artist. These artists are all local, hand-picked talent, that were chosen to feature at RAW.”

It doesn’t just happen in Indianapolis either. It happens in 60+ cities across the United States and even in Australia!

You can check out my RAW online artist profile and buy tickets for the event there or at the Provocations event page. Tickets are only $10 in advance and $15 at the door. That’s a steal considering all the amazing talent, fun, and creativity packed under one roof. You can also check out the Facebook event page, share it, and invite your friends.

When buying tickets, you will be asked which artist you are supporting. That’s where you help me out and select my name. The more tickets I sell, the better. And after all, the more people who show up, the more fun we’ll all have.

Another great thing RAW does every year is RAWards. At the end of every RAW season, there is an annual indie arts awards show. It’s called RAWards. This year will mark the 4th annual RAWards season and show. Over the course of 2.5 months ALL RAW artists are eligible to participate in RAWards and perhaps win the national title of RAW Artist of the Year in their craft.

The process starts with a two-week online public vote, then moves to a Showcase Director score card, then to a Local Semi-Finals event with local judges, then a National Panel of Judges (made up of industry professionals and creative celebs) and finally the winners are announced in December 2012, and honored at our annual RAWards Show and Ceremony in Los Angeles in January 2013.

The prize packages are ridiculous. This is just for the visual artist of the year…(which I’ll be entered in.)

RECAP – Set Me Free @ Studio 303

Monday, February 7th, 2011

What a night! If you weren’t able to make it out to the show last Friday, that’s alright. I figured it would be neat to create a  little time lapse video of the installation so you could get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at how it all came together. The installation took about 8 hours straight through. I started at around 6pm on Thursday night and worked until 3:30am Friday morning. I wouldn’t have made it without that coffee that Dan got me. Thanks Dan!

The show consisted of 53 pieces of art, 52 on this main wall. I created work that varied in materials as well as size. Because of this, I chose to display them grouped together in an installation style format. I wanted it to be visually overwhelming at first and then let the viewer take a closer look at the visual cacophony.

My work seems to be incorporating more collage and less with three dimensional found objects. This is partly because of space restraints and also the ability to work inside the house instead of out in the garage. I still try to have ‘canvases’ and frames that are unconventional too. This happens quite easily when you try to reuse instead of going to the art store to buy your materials. Anything from old cabinet doors, counter tops, kids toy toolbox, hardback book covers, etc.

I am also starting to experiment with reusing the paper from the books I’ve destroyed while excavated collage material. I end up shredding the paper and using the pulp to make paper, relief, and three dimensional objects. Not wanting to waste, I also started to use the hardback covers of the books as canvases. They are great for simple collage works of a smaller scale.

I was also able to create some larger, very busy collage works for the show. It was nice to have these balance out some of the smaller, simpler pieces. I want to experiment with even large collage pieces in the future. I try not to put myself in a creative corner that I can’t get out of.

As far as the show, I was really pleased with the turn out. A lot of folks showed up to check out my art and listen to the sounds of Echomaker. Studio 303 is a great space in the Murphy Arts Center and is the home of Audio Recon digital distribution, Pattern Hungry records, and the ever talented Echomaker. They will continue to bring more artists through there space so be sure to check out Studio 303 every First Friday.

People passing through, checking out the art.

The crowd looks on as Echomaker starts their set.

Everybody was definitely feeling the performance and I was really lucky to have them play.

Echomaker is Eric Brown (drums), Neil Cain (bass, vocals), Cory Salas (MC, beats), Dan Marquis (keys, vibraphone), and Dietrick Klooster (trombone).

Thanks again to the guys in Echomaker and to everyone who came out to support me. You made it a special night!
