‘Lost and Found’ Lead Story
Wednesday, January 20th, 2010Holiday Art Sale at the Artsgarden
Monday, December 14th, 2009Ah yes, where to start? Well, first of all I just want to say thanks to the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Be Indypendent for giving me the opportunity to share my art with people in such a large and populous venue. The Artsgarden is a truly amazing place. I wish I could live there.
Luckily, my good friend Drew Skwarcan was along for the ride all day on Friday. He helped me with loading, unloading, setting up, keeping me company, and even went the extra mile to take a ton of photos and hours upon hours of video during the event. Of course, he didn’t want the footage to go to waste so he created this super nice video not just for me but for everyone. This way everyone will get to see a glimpse into what went down at the Holiday Art Sale at the Artsgarden. Without further ado…
The day started off early. 6am early. I probably should have got more sleep that night but I had so many things I didn’t want to forget. Coffee was my life saver like always. After loading all the essentials and 70+ pieces of art into my van that barely started on that cold morning, I went to pick up Drew. We made it to the underground parking garage on time and thought it was going to be cheap to park there. Well, let me tell you something it wasn’t. $20 to park all day seems a bit steep for me but I am also famous for being frugal. Onward!

Early bird gets the worm! *
When I found out I was one of the first to arrive that allowed me to settle my nerves a little bit. I hate running around trying to get things ready at the last minute. Even though I had two hours to set up, it still seemed like that was the outcome. I did get everything set up in time though.

Final setup. Almost two hours of work. **
After a couple different figurations and adding a table, I finally had enough room for all my art. You never can be too prepared I guess. I was very pleased with the layout. I was able to hang a few larger works in the back. This along with the smaller works showed viewers that my work varies in size as much as the materials do. I enjoy this. I don’t want to be a ‘one-trick dog’ as they say. Who says that? I don’t know…

Close up of assorted works. *
I made a lot of smaller works specifically for this show. My goal was to create original yet affordable artwork. This was the great time for people to pick up last minute Holiday gifts or start a personal art collection. It is very important to me to keep my work evolving while still making it affordable to people. There are some artist’s work who I love but I unfortunately can’t even buy one of their prints let alone an original. I guess it all comes down to the fact that ‘affordable’ seems to be a pretty subjective word these days.

Conversing with friend and fellow artist, Phil Cardenas. *
Not only was I able to meet new people at the sale but a lot of my friends and family took the time to swing by. I cannot tell you how much this little act means to me. It is so easy to stay inside (especially with the cold weather and all…) but these people took the time out of their day to see me and my art. Awesome stuff right there! So thanks to all my friends and family who came out to see my booth! You guys are super supportive and are a positive force that keeps me doing what do. I want to make sure that you know I appreciate it.

View from my booth. **
But, I wasn’t the only one at the sale! There were 20+ talented and creative people putting their work out there for the world to see. I admire that. It takes a lot of hard work and proverbial balls to do an event like this so kudos to all the artists who participated. I sure hope they had as much fun as I did.

Second story view. *
Isn’t this space remarkable? I can’t say enough about it. I still want to live there. I need to get out more and just wander around the city like I used to back in High School, camera in hand. The Holiday Art Sale was another event that shows just how much talent Indianapolis has to offer. I hope to see all forms of art succeed and flourish in the future. We need to be a cornerstone of creativity in the Midwest. Let’s make it happen Indy!

Close up of the custom magnets made from old coasters. *
I had a lot of fun creating these magnets. I was strolling through Goodwill (one of my favorite pastimes) when I saw a stack of old coasters. I knew right away I could use them. I was already toying around with the idea of creating custom magnets and these fit my idea perfectly. I thought it would be a great and inexpensive way to add art to the kitchen. Magnets aren’t pricey and some art shouldn’t be either. So why not combine the two? I focused on juxtaposing collage images and word phrases in a comical yet sometimes troubling manner. I enjoyed them and seeing as I sold a few, I know others did as well.

Speaking with people about recycling opportunities around Indy. *
Another component to my booth was having free information about recycling available for people. Not only do I try to recycle through means of my art but in every day life as well. I also feel some individuals don’t recycle because they don’t know where or what to recycle. Knowledge is power. No one is perfect when it comes to their carbon footprint but we should at least all try to not be so wasteful. My friend Corrina hooked me up with the printed information that was available. Thanks Corrina! You can learn more about recycling opportunities and how to make a difference at the Indiana Recycling Coalition’s website.

End of the day. Last chance to pick up something! *
After a slower mid-afternoon session, the masses hit the Artsgarden with full force. Friends, family, and even some people I met at Oranje back in September came out just to see my work. It was so great! I am glad we ended the night off strong. I can’t say enough about the success that was the Holiday Art Sale. So after a long day, we packed up and headed out. Did I mention the price of parking?…..eh, anyways. Then it was off to Wendy’s for a well needed late night snack. Does four double stacks and a frosty count as a snack?

Busy, Busy, and Jam Vs Jelly
Saturday, November 28th, 2009I know it has been almost a week since I have done a blog post. I have been super busy lately and with Thanksgiving thrown in the mix, it has been interesting. I currently working on:
1. a 12 panel cd insert for a friend
2. Creating work for the Holiday Sale
3. Creating work for the “Both Sides of the Beat” show
4. Framing up a 4 ft. x 5 ft. painting I did recently
5. Photographing ALL of the work I have done recently and get it on the site
6. Much more….
If you would have asked me a little over 6 months ago if I would be this busy I would have said No. Don’t get me wrong, when I say busy that is a good thing. It is a great thing! I have never been this motivated before and had this much on my plate. I have met so many amazing individuals through the process and I know it is only just getting started. My art is getting out in the world to other people and that is what makes me most happy.
Speaking of the Holiday Art Sale, here is an example of the size work I will have for sale. This is roughly 5″ x 5″. There are two more just like this that together create a three piece series. For more information on the Holiday Art Sale you can visit HERE and HERE. It is on Friday December 11 from 10am – 9pm. Mark your calendars! There will be over 20+ artists there!

There is more great news. Recently I contacted Scott from JamVsJelly about possibly getting my work on his site. JamVsJelly is a “comprehensive, content rich and multi-discipline online arts publication. With its focus primarily focusing on fine art, photography, design and short stories.” Not only did he respond back saying he would like to have a feature article on me and my work but also be a contributor to the website representing Indianapolis. I cannot tell you how excited and honored I am to have this chance to reach such a vast audience. The possibilities are endless and JamVsJelly is only going to get bigger.
Scott has been working all day and night to get the site ready for launch. He received over 1,500 submissions of artwork/short stories last week. He had to sort through it all and get everything organized. Make sure you bookmark JamVsJelly and become a fan on Facebook.
Be sure to keep checking back to JamVsJelly. Once we are up and running, there will be new artists and material rotating through the site frequently. Check it out! Tell your friends!
Here is a logo I drew up last night for the site. It was my first attempt at using my tentacles as letters to create words. It was definitely a lot different than what I am used to as far as process goes. It is spray paint, acrylic, marker, and ink on watercolor paper.

A Tooth With A Crown Of Teeth
Thursday, November 19th, 2009I recently acquired some pretty big sheets of peel-n-stick sticker paper from work. (Thanks Stephen) I was throwing a couple ideas around like printing on the entire sticker as just one print but finally decided to print multiples of one design on a full sheet. I haven’t done the math just yet (it is too late in the evening) but I can fit a decent amount of smaller stickers on these huge sheets. I wanted to get them printed in time for the Holiday Art Sale at the Artsgarden on Dec. 11.
I am usually working with found objects, tools, etc. and not sitting behind the computer illustrating designs and such. Although I am usually happy with the end result, the process almost feels like homework sometimes. Maybe that’s because I have to sit still and be painfully tedious.

The design I came up with was based on a sketch I drew up for my forearm tattoo. Nick McNulty ended up adapting it and it looks even better on my arm with his changes. His design is more organic while mine is very static and symmetrical. I tweaked the levels on PS and added some text. I tried to have it a little rough around the edges so it would look cohesive with the rest of my art.
I am looking forward to seeing how they turn out. Hopefully they can get printed soon. We shall see. I will let you know when the final product is available.
Crazy Collage and Funky Frames
Monday, November 16th, 2009I have been beating myself up a little bit for neglecting to update the blog recently. It has been six days now….I have to step back and find this hilarious considering with the old site I went on a period of literally not updating the site for months. I mean months, over six months. So if I broke your heart, I’m sorry.

A recent shot of the ‘winter studio’.
I have been busy (aren’t we all) getting smaller works ready for the Art Council of Indianapolis/Be Indypendent Holiday Art Sale. I have finished a lot of work on the 8-track tapes as well as utilizing old frames I have been collecting. The work is definitely going to have a wide spectrum of conceptual and formal elements. My main focus is just creating works that are affordable for everyone. I am still using plenty of collage images but not as much found objects because the majority of them are too big for the scale I am currently working in.

Most of these will be for sale for around $20 at the Artsgarden on Friday Dec. 11. Instead of buying your gifts at Walmart or Target this year, come on down and buy some of my original artwork for around the same price. You would be supporting the local art scene which is always a great thing.

A couple new smaller works with funky frames
Not only am I preparing for the Holiday Art Sale at the Artsgarden but the next day, Saturday Dec. 12 I will be a part of the “Both Sides of the Beat” at Indy Hostile. It will be similar to the event that took place at the Big Car Gallery on Nov. 6. It will be an experimental hiphop show with spoken word and some freestylin’ as well. Some of my work will be hanging during the event. Mark your calendar! Another event you shouldn’t miss. It will be a night full of great talent coming from two different forms of art. More info/details to come in the future. I hope to see you there.
More good news on the art front
Thursday, November 5th, 2009Don’t forget to come out tomorrow night, Friday Nov. 6 to the P.U.P. Studio (People for Urban Progress, studio 213) to view some of my work and check out what P.U.P. is up to. They have a lot of great projects going on right now that are all geared towards improving Indiana and giving back to the community. Stop by to have some fun with us and learn something while you’re at it.
Down the hall at Big Car Gallery will there will be the “Dead Zone Boys art show inspired by the new album by Jookabox.
Artists in the show: Jessica Sowls, Jim Walker, NERS, Liz Janes, John Clark, Erin Drew, DM Stith, Ryan Irvin, Craig McCormick, Casey Roberts and Tom Streit.
Also that night, Pattern-Hungry Records will be presenting a night of hip-hop, spoken word, and everything in between. Exploring the art of poetry on and off the beat, Both Sides of the Beat will showcase hip-hop and spoken word artists presenting their most adventurous work. Featured performers will include Pattern-Hungry Records recording artists Lorax, Ligyro, and Yeti One appearing together as Twin Monster alongside spoken word artists TJ Reynolds, Ace One, Neil Cain and Dan Marquis.”
If you haven’t checked out the new Red Bus 2 album, you can do so here. All the songs on the album were written and performed by Yeti-One, Ded Flower, and Lorax. It also features Ace One, Rusty Redenbacher of the MUD KIDS, and T.J. Reynolds. Killer stuff.
On to more great news.
I recently applied to be a part of the “Buy Indy Art/Give Indy Art” Holiday Shopping Experience in the Indianapolis Arstgarden. This event will be hosted by The Arts Council of Indianapolis and Be Indypendent and take place on Friday, December 11 from 10am-9pm. This event is to encourage the purchase of original, local art whether it be for a gift or even for yourself because let’s face it, you deserve something good every once and awhile.
So now that you now what it is, you need to know that I got accepted to participate. I am super excited and already have a lot great work ready to go for the show but I will still try to have as much available as physically possible. It is going to be a lot of smaller, more affordable work that will be easier to give as a gift and especially easier to carry through the mall….
More details about the Artsgarden Holiday Shopping Experience in the future.
Time to get back to work…
