Free Work Wednesday – The end….for now.

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Well, I think last week was the last Free Work Wednesday I’m going to do for a while. The week goes by too fast and the past couple weeks I’ve been running behind on creating a piece. 16 weeks in a row, one piece each week….my creativity is low and I don’t want to force it. If I did, I would just be posting sub-par art that I wasn’t fully happy with and that’s not a good situation.

I’m not ruling out the possibility of doing it sporadically again in the future but for right now, I need a break from F.W.W. I have a lot on my proverbial plate and with that, I have plenty to keep me busy. I just want to say thanks to everyone who participated and made it fun for me to do. I’m sorry if you didn’t win a piece but like I said, I might do it again in the future. A lot of times, it was very difficult for me to choose a title because I liked multiple submissions.

The winner of last week’s Free Work Wednesday piece is Mark with the title “Fandango!”. Congrats! It’s all yours.

Be sure to keep stopping by Nathan Monk Art (dot) com to see what I’ve been up to lately. Looks like a lot of great events planned for 2011 with Big Car Gallery and Made For Each Other. Thanks again for all your support!

P.S. If you can, come out to the Harrison Center for “The Sign Show” this Friday night. There will be a silent auction going on and I have a piece there as well. —> http://nathanmonkart.com/sign-show-sneak-peak/

Proceeds will go to benefit our homeless neighbors through the services of Horizon House. Please see what you can do to help! Thanks! See you there!

Crazy Collage and Funky Frames

Monday, November 16th, 2009

I have been beating myself up a little bit for neglecting to update the blog recently. It has been six days now….I have to step back and find this hilarious considering with the old site I went on a period of literally not updating the site for months. I mean months, over six months. So if I broke your heart, I’m sorry.

A recent shot of the ‘winter studio’.

I have been busy (aren’t we all) getting smaller works ready for the Art Council of Indianapolis/Be Indypendent Holiday Art Sale. I have finished a lot of work on the 8-track tapes as well as utilizing old frames I have been collecting. The work is definitely going to have a wide spectrum of conceptual and formal elements. My main focus is just creating works that are affordable for everyone. I am still using plenty of collage images but not as much found objects because the majority of them are too big for the scale I am currently working in.

Most of these will be for sale for around $20 at the Artsgarden on Friday Dec. 11. Instead of buying your gifts at Walmart or Target this year, come on down and buy some of my original artwork for around the same price. You would be supporting the local art scene which is always a great thing.

A couple new smaller works with funky frames

Not only am I preparing for the Holiday Art Sale at the Artsgarden but the next day, Saturday Dec. 12 I will be a part of the “Both Sides of the Beat” at Indy Hostile. It will be similar to the event that took place at the Big Car Gallery on Nov. 6. It will be an experimental hiphop show with spoken word and some freestylin’ as well. Some of my work will be hanging during the event. Mark your calendar! Another event you shouldn’t miss. It will be a night full of great talent coming from two different forms of art. More info/details to come in the future. I hope to see you there.

More good news on the art front

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Don’t forget to come out tomorrow night, Friday Nov. 6 to the P.U.P. Studio (People for Urban Progress, studio 213) to view some of my work and check out what P.U.P. is up to. They have a lot of great projects going on right now that are all geared towards improving Indiana and giving back to the community. Stop by to have some fun with us and learn something while you’re at it.

Down the hall at Big Car Gallery will there will be the “Dead Zone Boys art show inspired by the new album by Jookabox.

Artists in the show: Jessica Sowls, Jim Walker, NERS, Liz Janes, John Clark, Erin Drew, DM Stith, Ryan Irvin, Craig McCormick, Casey Roberts and Tom Streit.

Also that night, Pattern-Hungry Records will be presenting a night of hip-hop, spoken word, and everything in between. Exploring the art of poetry on and off the beat, Both Sides of the Beat will showcase hip-hop and spoken word artists presenting their most adventurous work. Featured performers will include Pattern-Hungry Records recording artists Lorax, Ligyro, and Yeti One appearing together as Twin Monster alongside spoken word artists TJ Reynolds, Ace One, Neil Cain and Dan Marquis.”

If you haven’t checked out the new Red Bus 2 album, you can do so here. All the songs on the album were written and performed by Yeti-One, Ded Flower, and Lorax. It also features Ace One, Rusty Redenbacher of the MUD KIDS, and T.J. Reynolds. Killer stuff.

On to more great news.

I recently applied to be a part of the “Buy Indy Art/Give Indy Art” Holiday Shopping Experience in the Indianapolis Arstgarden. This event will be hosted by The Arts Council of Indianapolis and Be Indypendent and take place on Friday, December 11 from 10am-9pm. This event is to encourage the purchase of original, local art whether it be for a gift or even for yourself because let’s face it, you deserve something good every once and awhile.

So now that you now what it is, you need to know that I got accepted to participate. I am super excited and already have a lot great work ready to go for the show but I will still try to have as much available as physically possible. It is going to be a lot of smaller, more affordable work that will be easier to give as a gift and especially easier to carry through the mall….

More details about the Artsgarden Holiday Shopping Experience in the future.

Time to get back to work…

Collage Party!

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Last night, I attended a Collage Party at Big Car Gallery in the Murphy Building located in Fountain Square. Everyone was invited to bring their materials (scissors, glue, clippings, etc.) and have fun creating collage art together. Music, drinks, and food were provided. It was a great, fun environment and plenty of people turned out for the event.

As we finished our creations, we were allowed to display them on the gallery walls for next Friday’s show. The Collage Party show opens Friday, Sept. 4, 6-11 p.m. as part of IDADA’s First Friday event. My crazy collages can be seen here.

It was a great opportunity to create fun art while meeting new people and witnessing other people’s creations. I saw some pretty hilarious pieces done by some other artists as well. I didn’t get shots of them but I definitely encourage you to stop by Big Car this Friday so you can see all of the collages in person. Check out Big Car’s website here for more info and see what they are all about.
