Pepsi Refresh Project

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Some of you reading this may already know about Pepsi Refresh…for those of you that don’t it’s basically this project where Pepsi is giving away millions of dollars to fund different projects that “refresh the world”. The non-profit arts organization I’m a part of Big Car, is trying to get $25,000 to help transform the Lafayette Square area by opening a community creativity space in an abandoned Firestone Tire Service Center. The space will be called Service Center for Contemporary Culture and Community. “Service Center is a community art center designed to spark real change in an area of Indianapolis poised for amazing improvement. Through creative approaches, Service Center addresses many of the issues facing Indianapolis: education, mass transit, art and culture, diversity, libraries, urban gardening, recycling, and economic development.” Receiving this monetary gift from Pepsi would help a lot of our ideas become a reality.

It only takes a little bit of effort, a little bit of time to contribute to change and improve an area of Indianapolis that could really use it. Spread the word about Service Center and the Pepsi Refresh project. Vote, not once, but every day. Make it a habit just like getting on Facebook has become a daily habit for most of us. In the end if we win, you can say you helped. You can say you made a difference. Let’s continue to make this city better than the day before.

Here’s what our Executive Director Jim Walker had to say about the project…

“How cool would it be to get Pepsi to fund programs at the new Service Center for Culture and Community? Music, art, education, urban gardening, community building. It’s all happening at Service Center — all in the Lafayette Square neighborhood that will really benefit from this boost. And you can help Service Center receive $25,000 from Pepsi, just by voting daily online.

We feel really good about our chances. We are in 13th place now and the top 15 receive funding. But we have a long, long way to go!

Vote at: http://www.refresheverything.com/servicecenter and text to vote by sending 106734 to 73774. You can vote twice by logging on via Facebook too.
Here are some tips on how you can help:

In order to receive the money from Pepsi, we need be one of the top 15 vote recipients in this month’s Pepsi Refresh voting cycle. You can help us by voting every day in June! Here’s how:

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD – contact your friends, co-workers and relatives via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, whatever, and ask them to PLEASE vote every day for Big Car and Service Center! We have to be in the top 15 in the $25,000 category to get the Pepsi grant. We feel great about our chances.
Also… we are rolling this into a larger fundraising campaign that will continue over the summer. Here are the details:

Service Center Community Capital Campaign

The nonprofit arts organization Big Car is launching a summer-long campaign to raise funds for programs at Service Center for Contemporary Culture + Community, a new 11,500 square foot creativity-based community center with a communal garden on top of its front parking lot. Open since May and rolling out in phases, Service Center is dedicated to helping improve the Lafayette Square neighborhood. And Service Center will become a grassroots hub for art, culture, education, mass transit and diversity in the heart of Indianapolis. Service Center is also a base of operations for the nonprofit creative writing and educational organization Second Story and will house performances and programs by various other arts and community groups.

You can support the future of Service Center by:

Commissioned Work and Dojo Show

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Recently, the very talented Joey Molinaro approached me about creating an original collage piece for him. It won’t hang on the wall, instead it will be stomped on by Joey while he masterfully plays his violin. His latest project is an acoustic grindcore violin with foot percussion including a complete interpretation of “The Inalienable Dreamless” by Discordance Axis. He is going on tour with this musical piece all summer and if the venue doesn’t have wood floors, that’s where the skateboard comes in. He can stomp with style with his custom percussive foot board entitled “Virgin Mary Industrial Complex”.

Also, I will be opening up for Joey Molinaro and Mala in Se, am insane vegan art-metal from Cincinnati. The show will be this Friday, May 27th @7pm. The show is at the Dojo in Indianapolis and it’s only 5 bucks to get in. I will be performing an experimenting sound set with circuit bent devices/effects along with accompanying video projection. If you are into experimental, avant-garde, or electronic music you should come check it out. Plus, you won’t want to miss Joey Molinaro playing “The Inalienable Dreamless” or Mala in Se.

Nathan Monk In NoSpace: A collaboration with Tré Reising – Preview

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Last night, Tré Reising and I spoke with Charles Fox about our current collaborative show, opening tonight at the Wheeler Arts Community. There is a great write up with some photographs as well as a short video of us discussing the show over at OnTheCusp.org. Do yourself a favor and check out all the material on the site. It’s really great and gives you a lot of insight into a wide array of artists from around the area.

And of course, there will be more photographs and words about the reception tonight. I look forward to sharing this work with the public and I hope they enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it. See you tonight!

City360.tv Interview

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

A few days ago, I was fortunate enough to be interviewed for City360.tv’s Art Beat segment. I got the chance to talk a little bit about my art process, show images of my recent work, and share with the viewers my upcoming shows in March. I haven’t done many video interviews but I think it went better than I expected. There is something about a camera being pointed at me that makes me nervous…

You can watch the interview here….City360TV – Art Beat: Nathan Monk

I just want to say thanks to everyone over at City360TV for the opportunity. Hopefully in the future, I can polish my interviewing skills.

I hope to see you out on Friday March 4 at the Wheeler Community Arts Center for a collaborative show between Tre Reising and myself, “Nathan Monk In NoSpace”. Thanks!

March Madness

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

March Madness….I couldn’t resist a cheesy reference. It has been pretty busy lately though. I’m currently getting ready for two exhibitions for the month of March. First off, I will have a small collection of work hanging at Henry’s Coffee Bistro on East St. downtown Indianapolis for the entire month of March. This is a great little local coffee shop that you should definitely make the time to check out. Plus, they always have a new artist showing work in their space and I happen to be one of those this month.

I will also have work in the Benjamin Franklin Gallery at the Wheeler Community Arts building located in Fountain Square. This unique set of new work is part of a collaborative show with fellow artist Tre Reising. It will contain the largest collage works I have ever created plus the work being in a non-traditional format. This show is part of First Friday events and the reception will be Friday March 4 starting at 6pm. Be sure to come check out this unique collaboration and chat a bit.

“This is a collaborative effort between local artists Tré Reising and Nathan Monk. Together they create a new perspective on space and presentation of artwork. As Reising redefines the boundaries of the straightforward gallery space, Monk creates content with site specific paintings and collage which obey the new forced perspective.”

I also just recorded a video interview for City360TV’s Art Beat show. That should be online here shortly and I will post a link when that becomes available. It was great to have the chance to talk a little about my art and that it will reach a wider audience than a I normally used to. I am very excited for these opportunities this month and there is still a lot to do. So it’s upward and onward….

RECAP – Set Me Free @ Studio 303

Monday, February 7th, 2011

What a night! If you weren’t able to make it out to the show last Friday, that’s alright. I figured it would be neat to create a  little time lapse video of the installation so you could get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at how it all came together. The installation took about 8 hours straight through. I started at around 6pm on Thursday night and worked until 3:30am Friday morning. I wouldn’t have made it without that coffee that Dan got me. Thanks Dan!

The show consisted of 53 pieces of art, 52 on this main wall. I created work that varied in materials as well as size. Because of this, I chose to display them grouped together in an installation style format. I wanted it to be visually overwhelming at first and then let the viewer take a closer look at the visual cacophony.

My work seems to be incorporating more collage and less with three dimensional found objects. This is partly because of space restraints and also the ability to work inside the house instead of out in the garage. I still try to have ‘canvases’ and frames that are unconventional too. This happens quite easily when you try to reuse instead of going to the art store to buy your materials. Anything from old cabinet doors, counter tops, kids toy toolbox, hardback book covers, etc.

I am also starting to experiment with reusing the paper from the books I’ve destroyed while excavated collage material. I end up shredding the paper and using the pulp to make paper, relief, and three dimensional objects. Not wanting to waste, I also started to use the hardback covers of the books as canvases. They are great for simple collage works of a smaller scale.

I was also able to create some larger, very busy collage works for the show. It was nice to have these balance out some of the smaller, simpler pieces. I want to experiment with even large collage pieces in the future. I try not to put myself in a creative corner that I can’t get out of.

As far as the show, I was really pleased with the turn out. A lot of folks showed up to check out my art and listen to the sounds of Echomaker. Studio 303 is a great space in the Murphy Arts Center and is the home of Audio Recon digital distribution, Pattern Hungry records, and the ever talented Echomaker. They will continue to bring more artists through there space so be sure to check out Studio 303 every First Friday.

People passing through, checking out the art.

The crowd looks on as Echomaker starts their set.

Everybody was definitely feeling the performance and I was really lucky to have them play.

Echomaker is Eric Brown (drums), Neil Cain (bass, vocals), Cory Salas (MC, beats), Dan Marquis (keys, vibraphone), and Dietrick Klooster (trombone).

Thanks again to the guys in Echomaker and to everyone who came out to support me. You made it a special night!

Sign Show Sneak Peak

Monday, December 6th, 2010

I wanted to share with you some small detail shots of the piece I am going to donate for the upcoming “Sign Show”. “Sign, Co-Sign, and Going Off On A Tangent” is 18″ x 24″ mixed media work on an old found metal “Open House” sign. It is visually busy and very colorful. It also framed in a hand built poplar frame, similar to the style of frame I built for “Which came first: the mechanically separated chicken or the nugget?”. I am very pleased with the way it turned out and I hope to see you at the show.

“The Sign Show” will be held at the Harrison Center for the Arts on Friday January 7, 2011 and is curated by Tim J. Harmon. The show will be part of First Friday events that happen around the city of Indianapolis and all work is for sale! Proceeds will go to benefit our homeless neighbors through the services of Horizon House. Spread the word about this great show and show up to support a great cause in the great city of Indianapolis.

Thanksgiving Eve Celebration

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Next Wednesday, Locals Only will be the place to be. Every Wednesday, Audio Recon holds RECON WEDNESDAYS at Locals Only bringing a wide array of talent to the stage ranging from hip hop to jazz to soul. For this week’s edition, Thanksgiving Eve Celebration, there will be some of the biggest names in local hip hop. Rusty Redenbacher of the MUDKIDS, Echomaker (consisting members of Twin Monster, MAD LAB), s.a.i.n.t. RECON (ACE ONE, Mr. Kinetik, Jesse Reddingtion), Id Obelus, and DJ Deadrisk.

I was asked to create a flyer for the show and gladly accepted the offer. I’m fairly new to making flyers, banners, etc. and I’m still learning my way around Photoshop as well. If you didn’t see them before, I also created some banners for Audio Recon’s website and bandcamp page. I had a lot of fun making the Thanksgiving Eve Celebration flyer. I replaced baskets of food with turntables and a crate of records. I also added the Indianapolis skyline in the background. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget. Some of my artwork is still hanging in Locals Only. Swing by and check it out. All of it is for sale. Think about supporting local art when purchasing holiday gifts. Think about.

Test Fest 2010 – Part Two

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

“The Grass Isn’t Always Greener On The Other Side”- 2010

tree branches, sticks, bark, dead grass, vines, 2 metal posts, metal wire fencing

approx. 7′ x 25′

First off, I want to thank everyone who made Test Fest 2010 possible and also everyone who came out to support the wonderful event. I had a lot of fun creating my installation as well as seeing all the other artists make some truly amazing environmental works. There was even a little girl there who made her own installation! It was pretty cool to see that.

Luckily, I had enough time to finish my installation and also walk around a little bit to check out the rest of the works. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety considering we were limited to only using materials found in the park i.e. sticks, leaves, dirt, rocks, etc. We can definitely mark Test Fest 2010 as a success. It was the first event ever held at Skiles Test Nature Park and visitors expressed their enjoyment as well as their hopes for more events in the future.

If you weren’t able to make it, don’t worry. There should be a show coming up with photos, video, etc. from Test Fest 2010. This will give you a chance to see documentation of all the artists’ works in progress and the final product. If you did go to Test Fest 2010 and you took any photographs or video, be sure to email those to Jim Walker at jim@made4.org if you want them in the upcoming exhibition. I will have more info on that show in the future. Stay tuned.

Also, if you didn’t already see it, check out the first post about Test Fest 2010.

“My idea for my installation was to create a man made barrier or wall from natural objects i.e. sticks, grass, weeds, vines, etc. The view is very scenic over looking the grass field toward the interstate and I wanted to obstruct that view. I found a really interesting tree limb on the ground that had an oval created by the smaller branches on the limb. I positioned that in the wall as a peep hole for the scenic view. I only have part of the structure built so far. I will continue to add tree branches for the skeleton of the wall and then fill in all the void space with dead field grasses, smaller sticks, etc. I want it to be a solid wall except for the small peephole located in the middle of the wall.” – I just quoted myself…can you do that?

Test Fest 2010

Friday, October 15th, 2010

This Saturday is Test Fest 2010! Located at Skiles Test Nature Park on the northeast side of Indianpolis, the event will take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. There will be 13 artists participating including myself. Each artist will be creating temporary art installations at the park from materials only found in the Skiles Test Park. It is free to the public and visitors will be able to help some of the artists with their work including myself. If you want to come help me create, please do so. The location of my piece is on the map below.

My idea for my installation was to create a man made barrier or wall from natural objects i.e. sticks, grass, weeds, vines, etc. The view is very scenic over looking the grass field toward the interstate and I wanted to obstruct that view. I found a really interesting tree limb on the ground that had an oval created by the smaller branches on the limb. I positioned that in the wall as a peep hole for the scenic view. Beginnings of the structure for my wall

The peephole in the wall to view the beautiful field

This is my first time creating ‘earth art’ or any type of art that is this ephemeral. I feel many artists including myself make art to last, to hang on walls forever. An artist invests a lot of time, talent, and energy into a work and it’s sometimes painful to see it be destroyed. But for other artists including street artists, they relish in the short lived lives of their work as it deteriorates back into the natural landscape of the city or the country. I find this fascinating and hope to practice more of that type of art. Invest in something and set it free. Test Fest is a wonderful opportunity to for me as an artist view my art in other possible contexts. I hope my piece gets finished in the way I have planned. Come out Saturday and find out if I make it happen!
