Thanksgiving Eve Celebration

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Next Wednesday, Locals Only will be the place to be. Every Wednesday, Audio Recon holds RECON WEDNESDAYS at Locals Only bringing a wide array of talent to the stage ranging from hip hop to jazz to soul. For this week’s edition, Thanksgiving Eve Celebration, there will be some of the biggest names in local hip hop. Rusty Redenbacher of the MUDKIDS, Echomaker (consisting members of Twin Monster, MAD LAB), s.a.i.n.t. RECON (ACE ONE, Mr. Kinetik, Jesse Reddingtion), Id Obelus, and DJ Deadrisk.

I was asked to create a flyer for the show and gladly accepted the offer. I’m fairly new to making flyers, banners, etc. and I’m still learning my way around Photoshop as well. If you didn’t see them before, I also created some banners for Audio Recon’s website and bandcamp page. I had a lot of fun making the Thanksgiving Eve Celebration flyer. I replaced baskets of food with turntables and a crate of records. I also added the Indianapolis skyline in the background. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget. Some of my artwork is still hanging in Locals Only. Swing by and check it out. All of it is for sale. Think about supporting local art when purchasing holiday gifts. Think about.

Audio Recon

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

For those of you that have never heard of Audio Recon before, you are in for a treat. Audio Reconnaissance is a “digital music distributor and record label.”  They are also a “first call live event production and promotion company.” They have a ton of amazing artists on their team from Indianapolis to guest work from artists overseas. A.R. approaches music distribution with a new age mindset and knows what is most important: the music. Audio Recon is currently holding it down every Wednesday night at Local’s Only in Indianapolis for “Recon Wednesdays”. You should definitely swing by and check out what they are doing. TONS of amazing music is waiting for your ears at their Bandcamp page so ‘Keep Your Ears Peeled’ and go have a listen.

With that being said, I wanted to support them and figured I could help them out with creating some art for their site. Hopefully in the future, I’ll be able to hook them up with flyers for their shows. It lets me dive into a digital world that I previously didn’t use when creating art. I created three banners for their Audio Recon site and four banners for their Bandcamp page. I look forward to creating more of them. They were a blast to do. I want to give a shout out to Eric Brown and all the people behind Audio Recon for giving me the chance to help out. Bookmark Audio Recon and frequently check back because they are always adding new posts with new music from super talented artists.

Run & Hide. The GORILLAPHANT is on the loose!

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

My good friend Ryan Lee aka ‘Defame’ is a super talented musician. Not only has he played guitar in multiple bands but he spends all his free time creating sick beats. The dude has amazing skills and makes music to nod your head to. He has been in the process of fabricating and gathering up material for a legit release for a while now. Well, the time has come. The ‘Gorillaphant!’ is out of the cage and now available online for FREE DOWNLOAD!

Ryan was nice enough to let me design all the album art for the ‘Gorillaphant’. I loved the way it turned out and can’t wait to see it printed up.

You HAVE to download this. Not only are the beats insane but he has some of the best local MC’s on the album. It’s definitely not anything you’ve heard on the radio, that’s for sure. And that’s a good thing. We need more unique and creative individuals pushing what they do best out there for everyone else to see. Indy has many examples of that and Defame is definitely one of those guys. Get to know this dude and his musical creations because it won’t be the last time you hear about him.

B.S.O.T.B. Pieces are up!

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

For those of you that weren’t able to make it out to Indy Hostel for the Both Sides Of The Beat Show, I finally uploaded the work onto the site. Five new works were hanging plus two older pieces including s.a.i.n.t. RECON‘s album art ‘Psalm Before The Storm’ and ‘Crystal Caves’. Speaking of s.a.i.n.t. RECON, don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Duo-Release Show featuring Indy’s own s.a.i.n.t. RECON and Brad Real. The show is on Sat. March 6 @ Bently’s. Check out the Duo-Release Show flyer. You will not want to miss this show. Talent will be the name of the game.

I also have six new works hanging in Bootleg Exhibitions right now. The theme of the show is ‘play’ and they is a ton of great work by a ton of creative artists. The show was curated by the very talented Stacey Holloway. You should check out her work and check out this show. Hopefully, there will be a closing reception for the show. If so, I will let you all know.

I know it has been a while since an update. A lot of things have changed for me recently so I am just trying to get acclimated to those changes. As far as my artwork, I have been trying to create as much indoors as possible. Due to my studio being my garage, it’s hard to create in such a cold environment. I am taking this time to reuse as much scrap paper (magazine, postcards, carboard egg cartons, etc.) by making hand-made paper and three dimensional objects. I love discovering new techniques with new materials. That is what keeps me going. I don’t ever want to be a ‘one trick pony’. I think that’s the expression….

When the temperature allows it, I am also in the process of organizing my studio…again. Because I accumulate so many found objects it can get chaotic very easily. I am so many ideas running around in my head that I can’t wait to execute once it warms up. I am also looking forward to creative some more functional art objects. I’ve seen some pretty creative and original furniture pieces and home decor ideas online and it has opened up another venue of expression for me.

Well, that should be all for now. Until next time.

Both Sides Of The Beat

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

December 12th. What a night! I am sorry to say, but if you missed this show you missed something pretty big. There was so much talent underneath one roof, performing and not-performing. But you still have time to go to the Hostel and check out my artwork that is on display. Indy Hostel is such a great place. It is tucked away in Broad Ripple and if you aren’t looking hard enough for it you just might miss it. My art will be hanging until mid-January so head on out to the Indy Hostel before you miss out!

Ligyro setting up some beats with my art hanging on the walls

I created six new works for this show, seven including the s.a.i.n.t. RECON EP art “Psalm Before The Storm“. All the works were inspired by music in general and also partly the hip hop community. I re-purposed old cassette tapes, cassette tape holders, 8-track tapes, a speaker, an old record player cover, and more. I wanted the work the fit the theme of the event instead of just putting some older work on the walls. That would have been a lot easier but I took the extra time and effort to create new work specifically for the show. I think it definitely payed off. I couldn’t be happier with the way everything turned out. So, if you have the time or if you are in the Broad Ripple area, please take some time to check out the work. I would really appreciate it. Indy Hostel is located at 4903 Winthrop Avenue Indianapolis, IN 46205. If you get lost, call (317)727-1696.

Lorax and his daughter hanging out before the show

Before I start my recap of the night, I just want to say big THANKS! to John, Gibson, and Neil for putting on such an amazing event. We are really fortunate that the Hostel, which is fully functioning takes the time to hosts events such as ‘Both Sides of the Beat’. I sure hope everyone else appreciated that gesture as much as I do. Also, thanks to s.a.i.n.t. RECON, Ligyro, Lorax, Dan Marquis, T.J. Reynolds and the Free Hand Orchestra, and Big Skittz for truly great performances. Alright, now for the recap!

Jesse from s.a.i.n.t. RECON getting there early to hang out

As I arrived early to hang my art before the show, I was greeted by Neil, Gibson, Dan, and Cory. It was my first time at the hostel but I could tell as soon as I walked in that it was something special. The atmosphere was really inviting and the space was well put together. John and everyone did a great job with the house. I wish I could have seen it before all the renovations.

Everyone hanging out, drinking some Upland beer. Thanks Upland!

The show took place in the main room on the first floor. I felt at home. I swear the color on the walls was the exact color I had on my walls growing up at my parents. The old hardwood floors took me back as well. Maybe someday I could find an old house to renovate and turn into my own.

Awesome poster created by Bonzo Rockaway. Go buy some killer shirts!

As I was unpacking my art, there was bubble wrap everywhere on the floor. Cory’s daughter was quick to grab a sheet and start poppin’! I swear she went through a 8 foot long piece of that stuff. She was having a blast. It was great to see little kids at an event like this, soaking up the creativity and uniqueness of such a show. I hope she grows up remembering and being inspired by all the great things her dad and his friends did in Indianapolis. When my son gets a little bit older, I would love to take him out more so he too can get to experience something that many people never get to. It takes a lot to put your creative being out there for everyone to see and I commend every artist of any discipline sharing their talents with the world. It needs to keep happening.

A.C.E. O.N.E. and Kinetic from s.a.i.n.t. RECON performing their first acoustic set

This wasn’t just your normal hip hop show. This show included spoken word, some freestyle, and the first acoustic performance by s.a.i.n.t. RECON. If you don’t know about these guys, you need to get hip with it. It was just Jesse with his acoustic bass, and A.C.E. O.N.E. and Kinetic with their rhymes. It was crazy to see a hip hop group perform with ease without a big beat behind them. Those dudes didn’t even need it, their words kept the time. I couldn’t believe it was their first time doing it acoustically because it seemed pretty flawless to  me. The crowd even helped out with some feet stompin’ and finger snappin’. It was one of those moments I couldn’t help but have a goofy smile on my face because it was just too good.

s.a.i.n.t. RECON performing their first acoustic set as lucky attendants take it all in

I hope there will be more shows like this in the future. Hopefully, next time will bring twice as many people. We need to share the love and creativity that is happening in Indianapolis. Take the time to click every single link on this page. All the artists are super talented so check out what they are creating. Also, if you know anyone who needs a place to stay whether they are passing through Indy or not, give Indy Hostel a call. A unique alternative to trite hotels. Until next time…

Versus: A photoshop debacle?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Well, last night I thought I would take some time away from working on my 8-track tape collages and ‘fool around’ with Photoshop. I was never really a big fan of Photoshop and I think that stems from the assignments from college at Herron. I don’t think it was the assignments but my attitude towards them at the time. I kind of just blew them off and didn’t really spend the necessary HOURS in took to create something half way decent. I now wish I would have cared a little more and spent every waking hour trying to digest more art and culture.

s.a.i.n.t. RECON’s EP album art “Psalm Before The Storm”- Mixed Media .2009.

Fast forward to today. I still don’t use Photoshop a lot except for cropping and resizing images for the website. What actually got me back into using it creatively was working on the s.a.i.n.t. RECON EP album art. My contribution was all ‘analog’ but when Jesse added the digital lettering it came together so well and I could not be more pleased about the final product.

I then took on the task on designing Defame’s album art for his upcoming release “GORILLAPHANT!”. There was a lot of brainstorming and back-and-forth with this one. I actually started out sketching the album cover but wasn’t happy with the result. I was looking for more of a ‘collage look’ similar to the s.a.i.n.t. RECON EP art. I then decided to try a digital collage with images of other art I had already created in combination with a scan of the gorilla image. Once again, I am super siked about the way it turned out.

So, making a short story long…..I am trying to spend more time discovering Photoshop’s abilities while keeping my style present in the digital medium. Here is the light-hearted digital collage that was created last night. It is entitled “Versus”.

The Psalm Before The Storm

Monday, August 17th, 2009

I come bearing good news. The s.a.i.n.t. RECON EP album art is officially done and ready to go. It was an amazing experience and my first opportunity to create art for an album. I was super inspired just talking with Jesse and Kinetik of s.R. and the art almost seemed to pour out of me effortlessly. Jesse Reddington (Bass, Beats, Etc.) of s.a.i.n.t. RECON contributed all the text on the front and back cover as well as the design and text elements on the CD itself. The title of the EP is “The Psalm Before The Storm”.

Collaborations

Friday, July 24th, 2009

I just met up with Jesse (bass guitar, beats, and more) and Kinetic (MC & DJ) from Indy’s own hip hop grounp s.a.i.n.t. RECON. They will be using some of my art on their flyers and promos and as of right now I am in the works of coming up with the album art for their soon to be released EP. This is the first collaboration I have had with any type of musical artist and I am very excited to be working with such an amazing group like s.a.i.n.t. RECON.

I think they are definitely onto something different and it is really refreshing. You need to check them out here. You won’t be disappointed. Add them to your friends list so you can stay updated on their new music, shows, and artwork from yours truly.

They have two new rough draft promo ideas with my art on it up on their myspace page now. Do me a favor and check them out.

More to come.
