    Wealth, Power, and Pretty Flowers

About a month ago, I was at a rummage sale in Danville and needless to say I bought a ton of stuff. I think the people running it thought I was a little “off” when I was bringing up everything from old suitcases to scrap paper. I also found these black and gold mats that little league sports used for their photographs back in the day. It took me back to my days of youth soccer and cheesy poses/smiles.

I was working on some artwork one day when I decided I wanted to utilize them. I just received an old flower and tree catalog from the 1960’s from my parents along with old Life and Women’s Journal magazines from the same time period. In the catalog, there were vibrant drawings of flowers with catch phrases next to them like “Exotic” or “Dazzling”. That alone made me chuckle.

I then got the idea to take drab black and white photo clippings of rich and powerful men like Rockefeller and J.P. Morgan (at least I think it’s J.P.) and juxtapose them with the vibrant flowers and catch phrases. The result is quirky and comical, simple and bold.

    Wealth, Power, and Pretty Flowers

The series is entitled “Wealth, Power, and Pretty Flowers”.

From left to right, the pieces are entitled “Exotic”, “Dazzling”, “Fancy”, and “Showy”.

Sometimes keeping it simple is just as effective. And with that, I will see you next time.
